Prison of the Hated Pretender is an introductory adventure for 4-6 characters levels 0-1. Originally published on the Dungeon of Signs blog, it is a short drop-in location-based adventure with a couple of interesting puzzles, a lack of "book" monsters, implacable foes with an obvious weakness, and a very weird roleplaying opportunity. The new 2020 edition republished by Hydra Collective adds suggested guidance for new Dungeonmasters who grew up with 5th edition and don't know how old-school works. Stats for both BECMI and 5th edition, and setting neutral (though there are some implied things about the history of the world).

Every year, on the very same day, the city of Cape Coral has been besieged by a giant Kraken, killing dozens of people and destroying huge chunks of the town. That day this year is approaching quickly -- in fact, the town has only two days left to prepare. Princess Lua, the daughter of the former king of Cape Coral, has reached out to the party to beg their aid in protecting the town. The Kraken is far too formidable a foe to try to attack alone, so instead the party must convince as many factions of townsfolk as they can to aid them in the fight, set traps, and fortify or evacuate the town. After their two days are up, the Kraken attacks, and the party, supported by whoever they managed to convince, must face it in battle. Along the way, though, the players have a chance to figure out why the Kraken attacks in the first place -- and, if they are quick and clever enough, they can stop the attacks for good. The Dysmal Swamp is a coastal wetland that stretches over 100 square miles. Devoid of any urbanization, the ecosystem enjoyed its dank sanctuary. A community of bullywugs called the swamp home for generations, hunting and maintaining the balance of the land. The land also appealed to the Belange Company, a wicked fey-run enterprise making cheap magic items, who needed a secluded location far from both thieves and oversight. When the Belange Company established their magical workshop in the swamp, the bullywugs attempted to drive them off. However, the Belange Company’s supply of magical items provided enough firepower to protect their endeavor, and many bullywugs fell in the initial conflicts. The Belange Company began crafting scores of magical items to be sold across the region, using a cheap alchemical process that produced a nasty liquid byproduct glowing with chaotic magical energies. Rather than devise a new process, the Director decided to discharge the waste into the swamp. As production increased, so did the pollution, and the sludge began to warp the wetland. The region’s typically reclusive bungisngis population became aggressive. It is only a matter of time before these mutated swamp giants lay waste to bullywugs.
